Ride Logistics

Arriving by Airplane for your SBG Event

Arriving at the Bay Area airports, San Francisco (SFO) or Oakland (OAK): We can arrange special pickups (a private car or van) from SFO or OAK airports to your lodging location, and back to the airport.  Prices to travel from SFO or OAK and surrounding area to Santa Rosa and back to the airport are $175 each way per person, or $125 each way per person for groups of 3 or more.

Extending your Trip

SBG events meet in Santa Rosa at 8 am in the morning. Because of the length of travel from the Bay Area airports (about 1.5-2.5 hours), you may need to arrive to Santa Rosa the day before and leave the day after the planned event. Stay in Santa Rosa! The Hyatt is located in Railroad Square, just .3 miles or 1 minute bike ride from the SBG main office and ride starting point.

Starting and End Points

We offer 2 options for starting your SBG event:

  • Meet up: Meet your guide downtown at 111 5th Street, Santa Rosa, CA 95401.  Meeting time is 8:00 am. Climb aboard our full size, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van. We will leave on time at 8:30 am sharp. Please be on time to allow for the loading of bikes and gear.
  • Pick me up: We will arrange pick up from your hotel, home, or vacation home rental. We will need to be at our downtown location before 8:00 am, so we will arrange your pick up time to allow for this. You must be within 10 miles from our location 111 5th Street, Santa Rosa, CA 95401. There is a $20 fee for getting picked up and dropped off. If you need to be picked up and are located outside the 10 mile radius, we can make those arrangements for additional fees.

If you are experiencing any delays, please call our office at 707-583-1818.

Ending the event: We will first return to our downtown location of 111 5th Street, Santa Rosa, CA 95401. If you met us there, we would assist in unloading your bike and gear, and your SBG event has concluded upon arrival. If we picked you up, we would drop you back off at your hotel, home, or vacation home rental after assisting those who met us there with the unloading of their bikes and gear.

Bike Rentals

Don’t want to travel with your Bike? Rent a bike from us for $145 for this trip. Your rented bike will be a high performance, high-end, full suspension bike appropriate for the terrain that we will be riding. We have various bike sizes and options. You let us know what you prefer.

Traveling With Your Bike

Traveling with your bike can be nerve racking, but we will help make it go as smooth as possible. We will give you both a hassle free or do it yourself option with regards of transporting your bike. If you don’t have a case for packing your bike, we recommend one of two options:

  • Buy a travel bag or case. It is recommended to buy a travel bag or case for the trip to ensure safe transportation if you have a very expensive bike, or if you might plan another similar trip in the future. A bike bag can be a great way to protect your bike investment. If you buy a bag or case from us, we will assemble your bike for free when it arrives at our location.
  • Find a large cardboard box for bikes. If you think traveling with your bike will be infrequent, consider asking your local bike shop if they have a large cardboard box you can have to pack your bike in for travel purposes. They receive their new bikes disassembled in large cardboard boxes. Some bike stores will disassemble your bike and pack it up for you for a fee.

Rather Ship Bike To Us

Avoid the frustrations of traveling with your bike and ship it to us. You can courier your bike to our main office: Sonoma Bike Guides 111 5th Street Santa Rosa, CA 95401

  • For $45, we will take delivery of your bike and assemble it.
  • For $85, we will take delivery of your bike, assemble it, and give it a tune-up that includes adjusting derailers, adjust brakes, true wheels, and clean and lube drive train.

We will have your bike here and ready for you.

What type of bike should you bring?

We advise you bring a trail bike or solid cross-country bike with you on this trip with recommended weights less than 30 lbs.  The bike should be geared towards a multi hour ride with a good mixture of climbing and rolling trails, which translates to “earning” some of the seriously epic descents in Mendocino. Tools to bring (Guides will be carrying all these items and more.)

  • Multitool (preferably with chain breaker)
  • Tire levers
  • Pump
  • Spare tube

Spare Parts For Your Bike

Bringing the following parts and gear with you will help avoid problems if you breakdown or get broken parts*:

  • Rear derailleur hanger
  • Extra set of front and rear brake pads
  • 2 tubes
  • 2 extra spokes especially if your bike has specialty wheels

* If you are renting a bike, the below is not necessary (with the exception of tubes).

Accommodations

Accommodations during the trip vary by destination and may be viewed on the related destination page.

Ride Additions

We have a few add-ons that will make your ride even more memorable. These can be added during the booking and check-out process.

Fitness Requirements

Your fitness should be moderately high to take advantage of the multitude of trail options and to be able to enjoy your riding experience. Aim to be able to ride your bike for up to four hours a day. Mendocino has potential to be one of the most challenging trips. Training for it in advance will allow you to get the most out of it. If you are interested in learning about some training tips to get you ready, we are here to help out with that. Please refer to fitness requirements to learn more about how to determine your current level.

Packing List

  • Helmet (cannot ride without one and will be available if needed)
  • Bike gloves
  • Shoes for the type of pedal using
  • Lightweight, weather-resistant outerwear (coastal weather is cooler and can change fast)
